The Jefferson High School Academic Decathlon Team took first place in the large school category at the state tournament March 3rd and 4th, with a team score of 43, 253.3 points out of a possible 60,000 points. They also finished first in the Oral Super Quiz. This marks the seventeenth consecutive state championship for Cedar Rapids Jefferson. The Kennedy High School team finished third with 35,149.5 points.
Jefferson won 52 of the 90 individual medals, most ever. Mason Koelm finished first in the Honors division and Nile Happel finished third. Elizabeth Thompson finished first in the Scholastic division, Abbigail Frerick finished second, and Jack Richardson finished third. In the Varsity division, Rhett Thompson finished first, Chase Hannen finished second, and Stephanie Ray finished third. Mason Koelm received a near perfect score in the speech category and presented his speech at the awards ceremony.
The Jefferson team has now qualified for the national Academic Decathlon competition in Madison, Wisconsin April 20 – 22.
