Thomas Jefferson High School
At Jefferson we believe that failure is not an option and all students can reach high levels of learning when provided with the structure, nurturing, and support they need to become not only academically successful but productive citizens in our community. We strive to close the Achievement Gap by increasing the number of underrepresented groups in Advance Placement courses as well as raising the proficiency of all students in Math, Reading, and Science.
Jefferson offers many unique academic enrichment and co-curricular opportunities, endeavoring to prepare all students to lead healthy, successful lives. We are a comprehensive high school. To improve student health, Jefferson has become the only Cross Fit high school in Iowa, as well as offering the Project Lead the Way series. There are 23 A.P. courses offered for academic enrichment and providing consistent Extended Learning time during the school day where students receive individualized attention from a teacher to complete schoolwork from any discipline. This is designed to improve achievement and build positive school relationships with staff and peers.
Jefferson's award winning music department hosts the Band of Blue, West Side Delegation, Ovation, Orchestra, and a variety of additional band and orchestra opportunities. We generate five theater productions every school year in addition to having multiple clubs supporting the performing and fine arts, robotic and math challenges, service clubs, and student awareness. Hundreds of student athletes participate in all 23 state sanctioned sports each year.
We have an active Parent Teacher Student Association to provide scholarships and produce a variety show each year. Our Booster group donates over $100,000 annually to our school in addition to hundreds of volunteer hours. Performing Art parents' volunteer groups provide invaluable assistance in supporting student activities. There are dozens of opportunities for families and community members to be involved at Jefferson High School.
Jefferson provides unique and lasting educational opportunities for every student that walks through our doors so they are college and career ready. We provide expanded opportunities to 8th graders so they may start advanced math, science, and World Language courses a year earlier. We serve a growing population of English Language Learners with an immersive curriculum that allows all J-Hawks to share one another’s cultures and experiences. Every year multiple exchange students from all over Europe, Asia, Africa, and South America participate not only in academics but also in the community and culture that is uniquely J-Hawk.
