The Cedar Rapids Jefferson Academic Decathlon Team won the state competition held on Saturday March 1-2 in Adel, Iowa. The team scored 44,184 points out of a possible 60,000. Academic Decathlon is an academic competition where students study curriculum based off of a common theme. This year's theme was, "The 1960's". Students study curriculum in ten different subject areas including: Art, Economics, Literature, Math, Music, Science, Social Science and then take tests over those subjects. The students are also required to give an Interview, write an Essay, and give a prepared Speech.
The top scoring individual at the competition was Jefferson student Caroline Winter who scored 8,553.6 points out of a possible 10,000. Emma Lassen earned the highest scoring speech score and presented her speech at the awards banquet. Cedar Rapids Jefferson also won the the Super Quiz. Super Quiz does not count toward the team score.

This is Jefferson's 19th straight state championship. By winning state, they have qualified to represent Iowa and compete in the national competition in Bloomington, Minnesota on April 25th-27th.
