~ We would like to congratulate the 9/10 wrestling team for a 2nd place finish at the conference wrestling tournament. Finishing as runner-ups were Cody Hensel, Jonny Bishop, and Drake Allen. Tyler Bosenberg and Mic Vesey finished 3rd. Other place winners were Tanner Lund , Hunter Kloubec, Anton and Arthur Robertson in 4th place, Shane Lockhart 6th and Jimmie Maclin 8th.
~ The JV team had a good Day with Tyler Overturf being the only Champion on the day. Other place winners for the team were Dillion Witham as runner-up, MIcheal Smith 3rd, Ashton Appleby and Colton Thompson 4th and Bryan Griswold finishing in 5th. Good Job to the entire J-hawk wrestling team on a fine weekend of wrestling.
~ The final dual of the season was held Thursday night as the J-Hawks traveled across town to take on the Warriors. The J-Hawks spoiled senior night for the Warriors winning both the JV and Varsity meets. The JV team started off the night with a 66-6 win. Shane Lockhart, Hunter Kloubec and Shavez Butler all recorded pins. Shavez has been on a roll winning his last three matches and has made great strides this season improving his wrestling skills. The Varsity was next up for the night beating the Warriors 46-22. Lukasko, Carson, Builta, Kyle Bosenberg, Welsh and Herman all recorded wins. Zac Builta never gave up winning his match in the last seconds 8-6. Kyle returned to the warrior gym as a J-Hawk for the first time this season winning a very exciting match vs Pilcher of Washington 9-7. Riley Welsh asked coach Briggs before his match if he wanted a Tech Fall or a pin. You would think this a odd question, but Riley being a "team player" wanted to record only the second TF for a J-Hawk this season. Briggs told him to go out and pin him. Riley did as the coach asked pinning his guy in only :46 seconds.
~ Tuesday night brought to town Dubuque Senior and Waterloo East for a couple make-up duals. Our J-Hawks shined in both bringing home victories on what was a J-Hawk Senior Night. Senior was first up for the evening, and our J-Hawks did not disappoint the crowd as both our varsity and JV teams recorded wins. Hunter Kloubec sealed the deal for a JV victory with a hard fought win. Tyler Boesenberg, Brandon Leary and Conner Herman all recorded pins for the varsity. Steven Settlage might have had the match of the dual with an impressive win over a very tough opponent. Steven is firing on all cylinders right now, just in time for Districts and a trip to State.
Waterloo East was next up for the evening and they brought with them returning state champion Kyven Gadson. Riley Welsh had the honors of taking on Gadson, and after the match was quoted as saying.. "there is a reason he is the defending state champ, nationally ranked and a Div. 1 recruit". This dual was filled with plenty of action and J-Hawk pins. Conner Herman started the night with a fall and his fellow teammates followed suite. Tyler Boesenberg, Vince Mulnix, Kyle Boesenberg and Drake Allen also all recorded pins. You would have to say that the showing by both Kyle Boesenberg and Drake Allen were the highlights of this dual for our varsity team.
Congratulations to the varsity wrestling team for their 8th place finish in the 14 team MVC super wrestling tournament.
Placing for the J-Hawks were:
8th place - Kyle Boesenberg, Brandon Leary
7th place - Riley Welsh
6th place - Vince Mulnix
5th place - Blake Carson
3rd place - Dylan Moenck
2nd place - Steven Settlage
Champion - Conner Herman
~ Thursday night brought the Cougars to town for a crosstown rival dual with Kennedy holding on to a 24-41 victory. As many of you know, the night was filled with some of the greatest Cedar Rapids legends in wrestling for our State Finalist Celebration. Mel Wieland, the Metro’s first three-time state champion, legendary coach Bill McNiel and two-time state champ and four-time University of Iowa All-American Mark Ironside were in attendance along with almost all of our former J-Hawk finalists and coaches. There were some very exciting matches throughout the night with the highlight being Steven Settlages overtime win versus Jordan Baskerville of Kennedy 3-1. Brice Lukasko, Conner Herman, Drake Allen, Riley Welsh and Brandon Leary all recorded wins for good guys.
~ Saturday brought to town some great competition for our 2nd annual, newly renamed, John Hegarty JV Duals. For a second straight year South East Polk brought another tough team and took the team dual title going 4-0 on the day. Our J-Hawks after taking 3rd place last year, improved their finish this year by taking a 2nd place team finish followed by W. Dubuque and CR Kennedy. Asthon Appleby recorded pins at critical times in two duals today, which in turn propelled our J-Hawks to dual wins in both contests.

~ The J-Hawks hosted cross town rival Cedar Rapids Prairie Thursday night, coming up on the losing end in a 15-50 loss. Conner Herman got himself back on track after his first loss of the season his last time out with a fall in 4:40. Blake Carson and Riley Welsh bot recorded wins. Our JV team did not fair much better losing 18-57. Appleby and Bishop both recorded pins with the wrestler of the meet going to Appleby.
~ Our varsity/jv team traveled east to Linn-Mar on Thursday night for the dual. It was a rough night for our J-Hawks. Kyle Boesenberg and Riley Welsh recorded victories in the 6-51 loss to the Lions.
~ Monday night our Freshman traveled down to Iowa City for their 9th grade meet. Jonny Bishop led the way with a
2-0 record, recording two more falls. That is five straight pins from Jonny Bishop and an overall 5-0 record this season wrestling JV. Hensel and Timmons contributed to the good night both with 2-1 records.
~ Our Varsity team also wrestled Saturday at the Ottumwa Invitational bringing home a very nice 2nd place finish. Congratualtions to our whole team as all our wrestlers placed. Conner Herman stayed undefeated taking first place, while Riley Welsh and Brice Lukasko both took second place. Mulnix and K. Boesenberg took third, Hensel, Carson, Builta, Moenck, Settlage, Allen and Leary all took forth while Michael Smith brought home a fifth place finish.
~ On Saturday, our J-Hawk JV squad braved the single digit tempatures and traveled west to Benton Community for their JV tournament. BC's tournament always brings in some of the best teams from 1A to 3A schools in the state, and this year was not exception. Our J-Hawks ended the day with an overall 23-22 record. As a team, we wrestled tough throughout the day. 5 of our wrestlers did not let the cold weather and tough competition get to them going 3-0 for the day.
Not only did Mr. Bishop pin all three of his opponents, he did not giving up a single point throughout the whole tournament.
Arthur Robertson was not going to let Bishop be the only J-Hawk who had a great day. Arthur pinned all three of his opponents in total of 81 seconds.
Mic Vesey, Aston Appleby and Tanner Lund also all went 3-0 for the afternoon.
~ Our J-Hawks traveled over to Lisbon on Saturday for the Lisbon Duals bringing home a second place finish going 4-1 on the day. With the final score tied at 39-39, it came down to criteria. The two squads split the 14 matches and a winner wasn’t decided until Criteria H (most first match points scored) which resulted in an extra point and a 40-39 win for Lisbon. Heavyweight Conner Herman went 5-0 on the day while first year senior Zac Builta went 4-1. This was an awesome moment if you were in attendance. Zac was down in the third and fighting tough. Coach Briggs motions to him to show some heart. Not only did Zac give the coach exactly what he wanted, but he pins his kid in the process. The highlight of the dual in my opionion. Coach Briggs was quoted after the duals saying.. “We battled hard and wrestled tough,” said Briggs, noting an undefeated showing by heavyweight Conner Herman. “In different matches, different kids looked good.”
~ For the first time in over 15 years the J-HAWK 9/10 wrestling team has won the Kennedy Sophomore Duals. The team finished 5-0 on day. With wrestlers Cody Hensel, Tyler Bosenberg, Drake Allen and Mic Vesey finishing the day undefeated.
~ After seven matches, it looked like victory was in the bag for the Cedar Falls, but our J-Hawks had other plans winning the next seven matches, including four falls and a major decision pulling out a 37-34 win up in Cedar Falls. Pins by Riley Welsh at 189, Cody Hensel at 103 and Spencer Brosseau at 119, in addition to a major decision by Brice Lukasko at 112 helped pull our J-Hawks to within 3 points heading into the last match, where Blake Carson pinned Tiger freshman Jacob Schwab in 1:55 to give our J-Hawks a hard fought win.
~ Our J-Hawks had another busy weekend as our varsity team headed to the Maquokata Invitational bringing home a 3rd place team finish and 2 individual champions in Stephan Settlage and Conner Herman.

~ Our Freshman and Sophomores were also busy over the weekend as Coach Martin took a group over to SE Polk in their traditionally strong tournament. Dylan Jellison took home the wreslter of the meet distinction going 4-1 on the day with all 4 wins by a pin.
~ The J-Hawks had a busy weekend visiting three different tournaments. Our Varisity team traveled up to Cedar Falls for their Invitational which brings together all the top wrestlers in the state to start off the season. Stephen Settlage was our outstanding wrestler taking home a VERY impressive third place finish in a very tough weight class.
Coach Martin took a group of our JV kids down to Tipton with Tanner Lund bringing home the wrestler of the meet award. Coach Buesing took another group over to CR Kennedy. Dillon Witham and Tyler Neuhaus earned wrestlers of the meet both going 3-0 for the day.
~ The 2009-2010 season kicked off last night for our J-Hawks as we traveled down to Iowa City to take on West. The lone bright spot for the J-Hawks was a hard fought win by Blake Carson 5-4. J-Hawks fell to ICW 3-66.
“How big are your dreams? Write your goals down then ake them a reality beginning June 15 @ 1:00 PM in the JHS weight room. We will strength train Monday through Thursday with light wrestling fundamentals afterwards. Bring wrestling shoes along with your will to prepare.”
- Coach Buesing.
